Saffron Walden Community Energy is a not for profit organisation set up to work on grass-roots carbon reduction initiatives in Saffron Walden and Uttlesford.
We were formally registered as Community Benefit Society in December 2020 and are currently being supported by Essex County Council and Community Energy South in the early stages of business planning and funding/grant applications.
What we currently need are more volunteers to help run the organisation and also to work on getting some of our project ideas going.
Please get in touch if you would like to find out more!
We are in discussion with Essex County Council about installing low carbon heating in two or three local schools. Once participating schools have been identified, we will apply to the Rural Community Energy Fund to run a full feasibility study.
Renovation at The Railway Arms provides a great opportunity to include new low-carbon technologies. We are currently applying for a grant from LoCASE (EU funded) to cover 40% of the cost of solar panels for the barn roof plus other energy saving measures.
We've been in discussion with community groups running both electric car and bike clubs. Establishing these in Saffron Walden could be one step towards cleaner and healthier transport.
There are some great examples of buildings using a range of sustainable approaches in and around Saffron Walden. We aim to create a set of blogs to share experience and know-how, and perhaps arrange some on-site viewing once restrictions have been lifted.
Buy your energy from a company using 100% renewable electricity. Some also have green gas tariffs as well.
If you’re a frequent flyer, can a flight be replaced by a train journey or video conference call?
A healthy, balanced diet requires very little meat or dairy and can make a significant impact on your carbon footprint. Also, try and buy local, seasonal food.
Walk or cycle for shorter distances (with added health benefits) or take public transport.
Get better insulation, use more energy efficient devices, and consider fossil fuel free heating.
